Clearly I love home renovations. I’ve gutted my fair share of kitchens – from Queen Street to Lansing – but it’s always more fun when a client places their trust in your design hands (and let’s be honest… it’s a little scarier as well). The first thing I always do is consider the style of the home so everything matches and flows. This West Ashley two-story home is pretty traditional – and so are the homeowners – so this set the stage for a traditional kitchen remodel as well.

I’m known for recommending open spaces. I just think as a Realtor it helps add value to your home as most people today love homes with ‘great’ rooms. These guys fit right into that category as they knocked down some pocket doors between their dining room and den and between the den and kitchen. Now I LOVE the new open space.

My husband’s company – Sceltas – was contacted for the kitchen renovation. They decided to let me put my fingerprints all over this one as I made most of the design decisions. In my opinion, this particular kitchen has it all – from Terra Biance granite to top-of-the-line GE profile appliances in stainless steel. And, don’t forget the eye-catching Barbara Cosgrove chrome pendants. To die for!

But, what was really special about this kitchen was the unique butler’s prep area equipped with a sink and plenty of counterspace. However, it didn’t start that way. The original plan for this area included two closed cabinets on either side of the window and no sink. After taking a look at it, I recommended they redesign so the area would become more useful for party and cooking prep. Also, this area of the kitchen would serve as a ‘landing spot’ and it needed to be just right.

With the addition of a prep sink the room didn’t feel like there was something missing anymore. Paired with custom open shelves in black walnut, I am in love with this area of the kitchen. It’s just breathtaking.

My favorite aspect is the amazing penny rounds in ash color that we chose for the backsplash. They span the wall from the countertops to the ceiling creating a beautiful backdrop.
