Transitioning the Porch to Fall & an Easy DIY
Fall is here! Well, not in Charleston but in most other places around America. Honestly, getting motivated to decorate for fall is low on my priority list because the weather is still high 80’s and hot. I kinda feel like scrooge! It was time to quit my pouting, get my thoughts together and head over “to the place where everyone knows your name.”
No, y’all not Cheers, even though a cold beer wouldn’t be terrible. (P.S. It’s 7pm on Thursday night when I’m writing this) The other place… Homegoods! (They really do know by name at our local store – oh dear!)
Anyway, I wanted to start with the front porch because it’s a great opportunity waiting to happen. I enjoy sitting on it while the boys ride their bikes in the driveway, and that’s the first area everyone sees when they walk up to the front door.
First, I needed some essentials. We had two benches out there that really needed pillows, and I wanted to add a table and basic accessories. Oh, and plants! My hanging baskets have been hanging empty for some time now!
So, I started with this pumpkin. You can get a similar one here.
I took a regular kitchen knife and cut it open and also added holes in the bottom because I have plans to make this a planter.
Then I added this; a small fountain grass, and I love it’s wispiness. I took it out of the pot, added some dirt to the pumpkin, put the plant in and added more dirt.
Next, I needed to add some moss. I wanted to add Spanish Moss, but they didn’t have what I needed at the store, so I got this instead.
I like its simplicity. The faux pumpkin works well because in this heat a real pumpkin would decay. I also love the warm white of the pumpkin and the softness of the plant.
Ok, so moving on to the next items. I needed pillows. I found these two at Homegoods, and yours should totally have them, too. I LOVE this pillow. Burlap trim says “Fall” to me all day long!
Then, of course, I had to add a velvet-like pillow for softness.
This blanket in plaid is a winner!
Before I show you where the pillow and everything went, I need to go back to plants. (Sorry, all over the place for a moment!) Here is the insanely large hanging basket that I mentioned:
In the planter I put hardy garden mums, ivy (sorry, I forgot which kind, but it can handle the cold), balboa globe amaranthe & the fountain grass.
The final result is this arrangement. I liked all the green, the softness and the off-white look.
Now, that I’ve got everything, I put it all together and created this outdoor fall space to enjoy! (The table was a Homegoods score for $79.)
Also, the basket and the straw were all at Homegoods, too! They’re ready for fall, y’all!
Here’s another view of the new space. I also have matching space on the other side of the porch as well.
So, thank you friends for posting crazy good fall pics and making me feel guilty. It worked; I took the bait and began decorating.
Happy Friday, friends, hope your weekend is amazing!!!

I’m right there with you – having a hard time getting excited about fall with this heat, as ready as I am for it. I love this pumpkin-as-a-planter idea! Did you see the “mum-kins” on the cover of Southern Living this month? They’re cute too, but I love the clean look you put together with the neutrals. That plaid blanket is especially great. Thanks for the nudge – I still have a seahorse pillow on my porch! Lol.

Thanks Vicki! HA, it took the power of social media & seeing others to get me going!

How pretty! I can’t seem to find a white pumpkin… maybe the farmer’s market will have one.

I just saw a ton at my grocery store! I went faux b/c it’s so hot here and my pumpkins never last.
